Abstract

In this article, we propose a semantic model to describe the contribution of connectors to utterances, taking as our theoretical foundation argumentative semantics, insofar as we conceive connectors as conveying indications relating to the actualization in discourse (mise en discours) of utterances. Our hypothesis is that such indications concern, on the one hand, the connectors’ property of establishing (or not) a hierarchy between the contents they articulate and, on the other hand, the property that they have of making manifest (or not) a ‘voice’ that is behind the textual arrangement set up by the connector. To highlight these two properties, we adopt a corpus linguistics perspective based on statistical calculations; such a perspective will allow to see that connectors select in a statistically significant way the forms that are in phase with each of these two properties.
