Abstract

Abstract: Bakhtin’s speech genres (1997) help people understand content in their communication with others, but at the same time the genres undergo modifications as the field they belong in also evolves. Taking into consideration television media in the United States, the changes can either be related to technical or social factors, and the objective of this article is to present examples of continuity and change in the talk show genre through the programs The Tonight Show (NBC,1954-present), The Daily Show (Comedy Central, 1996-present) Last Week Tonight (HBO, 2014-present). The observations attest to the presence of the given and the new, which occurred not only in the macrostructure monologue-sketches-interviews, but also in terms of the main topics presented to the public (from entertainment to politics).

Keywords: Speech genres; Talk Show; The Tonight Show; The Daily Show; Last Week Tonight.
