Abstract

The objective of this study was to understand if the education offered inside Brazilian prisons contributes to the effective re-socialization of the learners. The methodology used was guided by bibliographical and documentary research. For the definition of concepts and data collection, we analyzed documents referring to the laws, decrees and public policies that regulate prison education in the country. The text begins with a brief record about education and its trajectory over the years within Brazilian prisons, followed by theoretical reflections on the role of teacher education programs in relation to prison education. Finally we sought to know the role of the teacher in face of the re-socialization of the prisoner student. The results suggest that prison education contributes directly to the re-socialization of prisoners, not only by elevating scholarity, but also by giving them a chance to achieve a more dignified life in an excluding society.

Keywords: prison education; resocialization; teacher education.
