DAS MÚLTIPLAS MODERNIDADES À PÓS-MODERNIDADE: UMA REFLEXÃO A PARTIR DE SHMUEL EISENSTADT

Abstract

The idea of multiple modernity implies that the best way to understand the contemporary world and to explain the history of modernity is to conceive it as a history of constitution and constant reconstitution of a multiplicity of cultural programs. The concept of “multiple modernity” has two implications. The first is that modernity and westernization are not identical; the pattern or western patterns of modernity do not constitute the only “authentic” modernity, although they have been historically precedent and are a central reference for other visions of modernity. The second is that the term modernity includes the recognition that this modernity is not “static”, but that is in constant transformation. These transformations lead to the post-modernity that has been occupying a primary place in the debate of contemporary ideas, penetrating a myriad of questions with political ramifications of the most varied order.
