This study aimed to map and characterize the scientific literature regarding the functional potential of microgreens in preventing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and to identify existing research gaps. A scoping review was conducted, utilizing the Population, Concept, and Context (PCC) framework: Population (Microgreens), Concept (Bioactive composition and functionality), and Context (NCD prevention). Systematic searches were performed across the Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus databases. Bibliometric analysis was conducted on 42 experimental articles published between 2013 and 2024 using the Bibliometrix package in RStudio®. Results revealed a total of 266 authors, with a significant surge in scientific production starting in 2019 and peaking in 2024 (16 publications). Compared to mature leaves, microgreens exhibited higher concentrations of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, carotenoids, vitamins, and glucosinolates, which play critical roles in NCD prevention. While microgreens are promising functional foods, the mapping revealed a substantial literature gap regarding their specific mechanisms in health promotion. Further in-depth studies are required to establish a direct link between microgreen consumption and NCD risk reduction.
