Abstract

In agricultural soils, especially in Brazil, the efficiency of phosphate fertilization is very low (<30%) due to precipitation reactions, adsorption, and specific adsorption that occurs with P in the soil, limit its bioavailability. Thus, high doses of mineral phosphate fertilizers (finite and imported resources) must be applied annually to reach critical P levels and maintain or intensify agricultural yields. The humic substances (SHs) can alter the dissolution kinetics of fertilizers, change P adsorption and biostimulant P uptake by plants. However, few studies currently address the impact of SHs on soil-plant P dynamics. This review presents a broad overview of recent advances related to phosphate fertilizers and SHs. The mechanisms through which SHs interfere with the kinetics of P in the soil will be presented, as well as the effects of SHs biostimulation that favor the P uptake by plants.
