Pesticides are extensively used in agriculture to control pests and safeguard crop yields. However, their misuse leads to environmental pollution and poses significant risks to public health, adversely affecting rural workers and consumers alike. Given the potential hazards of pesticide contamination, this study aimed to assess the practices, perceptions, and knowledge of family farmers regarding pesticide use in the municipality of Jequitinhonha, Minas Gerais, Brazil. A field survey was conducted with 25 local farmers using a structured questionnaire that addressed their understanding of environmental legislation, application techniques, and disposal methods. The results revealed that while the majority of surveyed farmers do not use pesticides, they possess insufficient knowledge regarding their risks. Among the subset of farmers who utilize these chemicals, the majority reported only partial use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Furthermore, a substantial proportion of respondents indicated improper storage and disposal practices. These findings underscore the urgent need for targeted educational interventions and public health policies to raise awareness about toxicological risks, promote biosafety standards, and ensure the correct handling and disposal of pesticides in family farming communities.
